A bit of history...
Since Spring Agora 2007 in Valletta AEGEE has again an Environmental Working Group (EnWG). The Environmental Working Group existed before in AEGEE history: in fact it was the very second working group of AEGEE, founded in 1990 just after East-West Working Group. Environmental Weeks in different parts of Europe were held in 1991, 1992 and 1993, plus several environmental congresses, academies and conferences throughout the 90s. But as it seems that at some point there were not enough enthusiasts able to keep the working group alive and in 1999 it was deleted. |

EnWG recent history
In Spring Agora 2005 Enschede, few members of AEGEE-Tartu and AEGEE-Nijmegen, after seeing the capacity of AEGEE and imagining what kind of impacts can be achieved through it, had the idea of creating Environmental Working Group (knowing only that there had been some attempts to do that in the past). Starting off quietly, creating awareness and gathering feedback from the members of the network, they held workshops in Agora Warszawa and Napoli in 2006 about environment’s place in AEGEE. The final push to create Environmental Working Group was given during the New Year event 2006/2007 „Freezing Hot New Year in wild Estonian Nature”, where besides hiking, parties and workshops also some open discussions were held. Organisers found more people interested in their goal and another meeting in spring was held in Brussels in AEGEE head office. And so 2 years later, in Valletta in April 2007, the Agora voted in favour of (re-)creation of Environmental Working Group (EnWG). The initiator group consisted of 7 people: Martien van Gool (AEGEE-Nijmegen), Katrin Tomson (AEGEE-Tartu), Kadri Kalle (AEGEE-Tartu), Miguel Gallardo (AEGEE-Alicante), Christian Pauschert (AEGEE-Karlsruhe), Meike Berben (AEGEE-Utrecht) and Katharina Werner (AEGEE-Passau). Agora Valletta brought also the first challenge to EnWG – our proposed Yearplan Topic „Sustaining our Future” was voted in favour by the Agora and so besides building up a brand new working group, preparations for a new Flagship Project with the support of EnWG began. Currently it is too soon to tell, where it all will lead us, but we hope for the best. |
