Ultimate Survival - Sustainable Road to Agora

What does sustainable travel mean?

Sustainable travel, or idealized “Travel without a trace”, is a form of travel that supposes a minimum impact on the environment, maintaining it without interruption or weakening.
Sustainable travel may not be as cheap and comfortable as other ways of transport, but it definitely is more interesting and funny and the direction we should all take. Some facts about the emissions produced by different ways of transport illustrate this: on a long distance, like from New York to San Francisco, a bus would emit 1.7 times more than a diesel car full of people, but think of all the people that could travel by that bus; a bus is considered better on long distance than the train, because it emits less CO2 (2 times less), although the train remains better than the plane (2 times less emissions). Traveling by your own, with an average car, produces the same level of pollution as a plane.

Our contest

What do we want?
As members of the Environmental Working Group of AEGEE, we are concerned about the impact of some 600 people traveling sustainable or not to the AGORA. What we want is to reduce the event’s ecological footprint by promoting sustainable ways of transport. And just for showing you that sustainable travel can also be a great experience, you are invited to join our contest.

What do you have to do?
Take a sustainable way of transport (bus or train) and have fun! But don’t forget to take a lot of pictures during your trip. After coming back, upload your best pictures on our Facebook group (http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/group.php?gid=151367866469) and show others that the problem concerns you!

What do you get?
We have prepared some interesting prizes for the best pictures, thanks to our sponsor, Lonely Planet. They are waiting for you!

We would like to thank all of you that joined our contest. We are proud to present to you the winning team. Among all the entries, we decided to award the team composed of Sandra Geldmacher, Jörn Lange and Michael Makowiecki.

Here are
parts of their story, as they shared them to us on our Facebook group:

Michael Makowiecki:
And we went from Hamburg by: bus, train, bus, train, marshrutka, foot, marshrutka, train, bus, marshrutka, bus to Odessa and tomorrow to Kyiv by train!

Sandra Geldmacher:
passing by L'viv and Chisinau :)

M:
and Tiraspol

Jörn Lange:
and Wroclaw and Krakow...
and you forgot to mention the subway to the train station

S:
and the ferry!

M:
Let's just mention that two guys from Hamburg went by bus to Poland, by train to the border with Ukraine, crossed it by foot and then continued with marshrutka, train, bus, marshrutka, train over Odessa, Chisinau, Tiraspol - all together more than 2500 km! :)
..and from L'wiw on we had nice company from a nice AEGEE-Konstanz girl :)

Congratulations and we hope you will join us in other projects and contests!
